Ok it is stupid that i really DO know the answer to the songs asked question but there is a reason why stores really do this and this has a psychological background:
human behavior, memory & daily routine.
I try to keep it short but yes, i had to learn that over here in germany in school for marketing. Stores try to keep you in their store "as long as possible" so that you HAVE to look around AS long AS possible to get the stuff you want, need and desire. This also explains "special sells" placement because they are mostly placed around products people are mostly going for, things like bread, milk, drinks, candy and near the cash-out area. This IS also the reason why they change the product placement sometimes around (mostly around 3-4 years) so that people HAVE to learn again where the stuff is placed anew so that they are, again, longer in the store to look around and buy something they might didnt want in the first place.
Srsly, think about that, it literally is a hardcore psychological "game" this people play with us costumers - and if i tell you what exactly i DID learn in said marketing school here in germany, people can be that good and play such games with you that you might just wanted to buy some milk in a store but you came back out and someone just sold you a car and you didnt even notice.
Yes, this is how hardcore we had to learn marketing over here. Psychological games i tell you...
